Hana Maatugh is a specialist biomedical scientist, skincare formulator and founder of Born of Necessity – Botanical Science Skincare. With more than 20 years’ experience in cellular pathology, she brings a scientist’s understanding of skin biology together with a deeply personal reason for building her business.
Her brand describes its approach as science-driven formulation for sensitive, reactive and eczema-prone skin.
Born of Necessity grew from a period of profound change. After losing her mum to cancer, Hana found she could not simply return to the same diagnostic environment and carry on as before. At the same time, as a mum to a child with additional needs, she found herself navigating the realities of being a full-time carer while trying to rebuild a sense of direction.
When her son struggled with his skin, Hana turned to what she knew: science, research and formulation. She began developing products to support his skin barrier, while also questioning the everyday exposures and choices that surround our health.
What began as a necessity for her own family gradually became a business with a wider purpose.
Today, Hana is building Born of Necessity around a simple philosophy: work with the skin, not against it. Her journey is about more than skincare; it is about grief, motherhood, caring, science, resilience and creating a new path when the one you expected to follow is no longer possible.

"I built my business while navigating grief after losing my mum to cancer and while being a mum and full-time carer to a child with additional needs. There were days when motherhood and caring had to come first, days when grief changed what I thought my future would look like, and days when the only way forward was to create a different path for myself.
"Born of Necessity came from that experience. I used my background as a biomedical scientist and my knowledge of skin biology to formulate something for my son when he was struggling with his skin.
"Over time, that personal solution developed into a business and a purpose: to create scientist-formulated botanical skincare that supports sensitive and compromised skin.
"I want to share that journey because I think women in business need spaces where the whole story is welcome – not only the achievements, but also the caring responsibilities, setbacks, grief, doubt and resilience behind them.
